Windsurfing Equipment? What do I need?

As there’s more to windsurfing than meets the eye, one of the first questions a newcomer asks is how much is it all going to cost. What windsurfing equipment will I need in order to participate in this pursuit?

It’s true, some of these newer outdoor interests do require a bit of investment to get you going and windsurfing equipment is no different. However, when you attend your first lessons, all you shall need to bring is yourself, some comfortable shoes, swimwear, sunscreen or sun block, a towel and some drinking water.

Safety is paramount and therefore any windsurfing equipment has to be of the required standards. In addition to equipment, you will also be required to take a swimming proficiency test or provide evidence that you are indeed a competent swimmer.

Once you get started, some of the first things you will need to get to grips with are the recognizing the various windsurfing equipment by name and by use. There is certain ‘sailing’ terminology used along with a kind of marine etiquette, and all these thing combined will build up your proficiency overall. Don’t worry, if you have a genuine interest, it will all fall into place very quickly.

The great thing about training courses is that you get to try before you buy. In fact you can always hire if you want to, but most folks that get real hooked on the sport, tend to invest in their own windsurfing equipment in time. Although professional instruction classes can vary in cost from place to place and time of year etc, you may be surprised at just how reasonable they are and it should not be too hard to find a course of 20 hours for $100 – 150 US.

You will probably be surprised at how easy learning to windsurf actually is. Once you learn the ropes, you can do it practically anywhere you wish. Okay, so we need a little water, wind, and your windsurfing equipment, but you know what I mean.

It’s a leisure interest that lets you enjoy the natural beauty of Mother Nature. It's also a solo sport and many find it a tranquil experience to be alone out on the water with their board. Windsurfing is enjoyed all over the world which means when you go on holiday, you should never be too far away from all the windsurfing equipment you need to pick up your chosen pursuit. Many of us don’t live along the coast line but most of us are never too far from a lake, so you see, it’s a more accessible pastime than you may have thought.

Remember this, it costs very little to have a go. It’s an easy sport to learn and with just a few lessons you should be well on your way to being a competent windsurfer and once you’ve reached that level of proficiency, you can get out and about and enjoy the thrill.
